San Diego hospitals turn the hose on heartburn

He said the esophagus is designed to be a one-way valve that normally is tight but relaxes to let food pass through. The female patient was the first at Sharp Grossmont to have the treatment.

Sohn said the Linx device is made of small titanium beads that contain magnetic cores and connected by titanium wires, similar to a beaded bracelet. She said the device is implanted through small incisions on the outside of the esophagus. The magnetic force of the Linx is equal to the body's natural lower esophagus pressure, which prevents reflux from happening. The procedure, she said, takes less than an hour and comes with minimal pain.Sohn said when reflux happens, the esophagus fights. In doing so, it can get injured. Repeated injury has the potential to lead to esophageal cancer. In the past, Sohn said, the standard surgical treatment involved wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophagus to tighten the lower esophagus and prevent acid from rising into the stomach. However, she said, the procedure typically came with more pain, more side effects, longer recovery time and more disruption to normal anatomy than the Linx treatment.
